Background & History: CPS-2000 & CPS-2500

CPS-2000

Background:

The CPS-2000 was introduced in 1996. It was the first of the powerful class of guns know as CPS, of Constant Pressure System. The new CPS technology used a rubber tube that the water was pumped into. The rubber tube then expands. The expanded rubber tube puts a force on the water inside. The cool thing about this system is that the pressure that is put on the water is close to constant. This is because as the rubber tube expands it puts out about the same amount of pressure, even as it gets bigger. The force increases, but the mass that the force is being exerted one also increases, which keeps the pressure very similar. Now its not perfect b/c there is some drop off, but much less than what was in a traditional air powered gun.

The First version that was released in 1996 is now known as the CPS-2000 mk.1. This is the more powerful of the two variants. The second version was released a year later in 1997. It is now know as the CPS-2000 mk.2. The mk1 has a longer and thicker PC than the mk2. This allows the mk1 to gain more pressure in comparison to the mk2. It also gives the mk1 a slightly longer shot time. Both are very powerful guns and are highly sought after by collectors, often going above $100 on eBay!

Identification:

Now if you own a CPS-2000 you may be wondering which version you have. The easiest way to tell is too look at the pressure gauge on the out side. The mk1 has a longer pressure gauge due to its shorter PC. The mk2 has a longer one b/c its bladder is longer and dose not need to expand as much. You can use the image to the side to identify your gun.

The pressure gauge is the only sure way to identify the one of these guns. There are rumors that the mk1 has a sticker that says “Air Pressure”, while the mk2 had a sticker that says “Constant Pressure System”. This is true in some cases, but the mk1 can also have the constant pressure system sticker. So it really is not a full proof test. Although if yours has the air pressure system you can be pretty sure it’s a mk1. But just look at the gauge, that’s the best way.

The CPS-2500

Background:

The CPS-2500 was released in 1998, along with the CPS-1000, CPS-1500, and CPS-3000. Many call it a replacement for the CPS-2000, which is a fair enough statement. Although it could just as easily be said that it was just the next gun in the succession of CPS class soakers. Either way, the CPS-2500 is a direct decedent of the CPS-2000. They are almost exactly the same, with a few color changes. The only difference between a CPS-2500 and the mk2 version of the CPS-2000 is that the CPS-2500 has a changeable set of nozzles, while the CPS-2000 has only a single one.

Externally that was all that was different. Internally they changed the “barrel piping” configuration around a little bit also. This caused the water in the stream coming out to be less coherent. For more on this check out the Specs page.

The CPS-2500 may not be as powerful as the CPS-2000, but it is powerful still. The CPS-2500 is considered to be the next most powerful Super Soaker that is out there. This and its good looks makes the 2500 a more sought after gun. It has become harder to obtain in the past year or two (written 2004). They now go for around $40 to $50 on eBay regularly.
